What is a CNC Mill?
A CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Mill is a machine used to do an action known as milling. Milling is using rotary cutters to get rid of material by moving the cutters around using pressure, changing direction, and depth of the cut of the cutters.
Which Mill is used in the Innovation Center?
The CNC Mill used in the Innovation Center is a Tormach PCNC 440 Mill. This is the smallest model available from Tormach.
What are 3 things I learned about the Mill?
I learned that it is the smallest model offered by Tormach. I also learned that there are over 350 pounds of cast iron on the Mill. Another thing I learned is that the Mill is controlled by PathPilot.
What software is needed to set up a project for the Mill?
Fusion 360 is needed.
What does the software do?
Fusion 360 creates the paths the milling tool will execute. It can also simulate where the tool will pass through to make sure the project goes according to plan.
If I could make anything in the Mill what would it be?
What I learned...
I didn't get to learn much about the CNC Mill because I never got a chance to use it. What I did learn is that the information that is put into the machine has to be exactly what is needed or it won't work, the Mill can be used for multiple different materials, such as steel and purple styrofoam, and it can also engrave steel.
